Reality Update

I watch Reality TV. Some would say that I watch too much Reality TV, but I find it entertaining in a way that does not expend much mental energy and that totally works for me after a hard day of work. I realized that I am currently watching 4 of them each week. Since I usually record the show and watch it later, I don't actually vote for any of the contestants, so there may be hope for me yet...

1) Grease, You're the One that I Want This one has turned out to be more fun than I thought. Theater hopefuls attempt to fill the roles of Danny and Sandy from Grease, set to open on Broadway in the summer. The show has the contestants sing and dance to music of the Grease period to compete as well as throwing in some Grease production numbers. Having been in a production of the show myself, I find it endlessly enjoyable. My favorites are the Max and Laura, the Danny and Sandy with the most unconventional looks, but the most talent.

2) Top Design I'm not really loving this show because I think that they should not put the contestants in teams nor give them such short times to produce their designs. I realize that this format has worked for both Project Runway and Top Chef on Bravo, but I think that it falls flat here. My favorites are sophisticated style Matt (who seriously pings my Bi-dar, not just because I think he's cute), construction creative Goil, and down to earth Andrea.

3) American Idol I couldn't agree more with the judges this season - the boys as a group are not nearly as good as the girls. Of the boys, only Beat Box Blake and Chris Sligh stand out for me, whereas all the remaining girls (except Haley) have been terrific. Melinda clearly has an advantage given all her experience as a background singer, but it really is different singing lead and I am definitely rooting for her.

4) Survivor Still my favorite concept for a reality show, but I don't like the way they are executing it this season. They divided the tribes into the Haves and the Have Nots, and to no one's surprise the Haves are kicking the Have Nots' collective asses. Plus, many of the contestants are pretty annoying. I like the two smart people on the Have Nots' tribe, Yao Man, who thinks his way through every problem, and Michelle, who started a fire with her reading glasses. I cannot even remember half the people on the other tribe. Hopefully, they will switch up the tribes soon and make things more interesting.

Need I say that I'm looking forward to the new seasons of Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway, and So You Think You Can Dance?

I know I've said this before, but you and I really do have similar taste in reality shows (or, as I like to call them "trash tv").

Grease: I LOVE Max. I refuse to call them by their nicknames which I find stupid and lame. But I love, love, love Max. I don't really have an opinion on the women, except that I'm not a big fan of Allie. But do the two hosts annoy you?

Top Design: I'm still in love with Goil. I totally agree with you on Matt. As for Andrea, I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other. And Todd Oldham should record nighttime stories. I love his calm, relaxing voice.

Idol: I'm all about Blake and Sligh, too. I CANNOT believe Sanjaya is still there. I'm glad Antonella got voted out, too. So far, I have no complaints with any of the female eliminations. There's something about Melinda (or Mindy Doo as the EW has dubbed her) that just irritates me to no end. I think she looks like Minnie Mouse and [livejournal.com profile] cappyhead has pointed out that she rarely blinks. Yes, neither of those have anything to do with her singing ability, but...

Survivor: I haven't been able to keep up with this, but I hope to get back to it very soon.

Dancing: I hope Ohno crashes and burns. I loathe him.

Runway: I'm glad they figured out a way to keep Tim Gunn. That should would NOT be the same without him.

SYTYCD: I didn't watch the first season, but I got hooked on the second season. I didn't love the host on this one, either, but I hear she was better than the first season.

I agree - both of the Grease hosts suck.

Goil is smart and cute. It looks like he has a lot to say in next week's episode.

Sanjaya's presence on AI is a testament to the power of the teen vote.

I haven't paid attention to the cast of the new Dancing with the Stars other than the news that Cliff Claven was gonna replace someone on it.

Much agreement about Tim Gunn. He's an essential part of the charm of the show.

I thought that Cat Deeley was a pretty good host for SYTYCD, although she has wacky taste in clothes.

Yeah, Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy from The Sopranos) was supposed to be on it, but the first week of training proved to be too hard for him, so he dropped out. John Ratzenberger was amenable to filling in for him even though it meant he only got two weeks of training before the first show as opposed to four like everyone else did. I'm hoping that he still does okay, though.

Ohno

So, what's wrong with Ohno? I thought he did a great performance.

I'm Korean.

If you know your Winter Olympic and or short track history, 'nuff said.

Plus, I can't stand his attitude, and I really want to tear out that damned soul patch hair by hair.

Grease: I've only been watching sporatically, but have enjoyed every show I've seen. I *may* be interested in seeing it on Broadway, especially if we have a group together.

Am Idol: Totally agree. Right now, Chris Sligh, Jordan and Gina have my votes. Yeah, I think Melinda and LaKesha are stronger singers, but I just don't love their style of music.

[identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Depending on who wins, I might consider a trip to see them perform. Although, having done the show myself, I'm not all that keen to see it for the sake of the show.

Gina is my favorite personality among the girls, but I don't think she's the best singer.

And let us not forget "Who wants to be a superhero?" and "celebrity duets". If you are going to confess your sins, confess them all! :-)

[identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
LOL!!! Superhero was hilarious and I'm eagerly awaiting the comic adaptation and the promised feature starring the winner.

Skating with Celebrities
Treasure Hunters
Celebrity Poker Showdown
Top Chef
Queer Eye (does that one count?)

Gee whiz! I've got my own Top Ten Reality Shows... I have no shame...

[identity profile] circesbed.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
You don't do The Amazing Race? I <3 that one, too.

Top Chef was awesome. It's a shame about Cliff because I really liked him. And I'm SOOOO glad that Marcel didn't win.

And Elia was hot, with or without hair.

I also do The Apprentice. I'm now crushing on Ivanka Trump.

[identity profile] circesbed.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, and I also do Real World/Road Rules Challenge, Celebrity Fit Club, the White Rapper Show...

*sigh*

Maybe I should find a Reality TV 12-step program....

Since I usually record the show and watch it later there may be hope for me yet...

I think there is a logical problem here. If the shows are important enough for you that you record them, there is very little hope left.

[identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's true. There is no hope for me - at least I am not a Neilsen rater!

[identity profile] psush-girl.livejournal.com 2007-03-12 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
american idol is the only one i watch out of the list you gave and i agree that the girls are a hundred times better than the guys this season. i'm sooo rooting for melinda but i also like gina, jordin, and lakisha. as for the guys, i'm diggin sligh, blake, and chris. and i'm very very pissed that sanjaya is still there whilst sundance is gone. aaah! the humanity! ;0)

*i do watch sytycd, and i can't WAIT until the new season of that*

[identity profile] circesbed.livejournal.com 2007-03-12 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude... wtf was up with Sundance getting voted off and Sanjaya still being there??? Maybe they have separate lines for Sanjaya - one for him and one for his hair. 'Cause people sure as hell aren't voting based on his singing.

Maybe the judges should get three vetoes per season. 'Course then they would have used one on Haley staying in. I know she's not a strong singer, but there's something about her that I just really adore.

[identity profile] psush-girl.livejournal.com 2007-03-12 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i agree w/ the whole veto thing but maybe that wouldn't work out so well, i dunno. but sanjaya definitely doesn't deserve to be there still. at all. i voted for him the first two times cuz i felt sry for him (and i can admit that) but after three strikes, he was out in my book, even tho he did *slightly* better this past week than the previous two.

i really don't even notice anything special about haley at all. like i don't even remember any of the songs she sang. seriously.

:0)

[identity profile] circesbed.livejournal.com 2007-03-12 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I know. There's really nothing about Haley that stands out - her voice, her looks, her song selections.... Except I can tell you she did "Queen of the Night" two weeks ago. The song last week was one I'd never heard before.

For some reason, she's just really captivated me. *shrug*

[identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sundance never truly lived up to his potential during the show and that was a shame.

I'm not sure if a judges veto would fit the spirit of AI, but I do like how it has been working on Grease.

[identity profile] circesbed.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
The veto comment was kind of tongue in cheek. Kind of.

I agree that Sundance was MUCH better in his first audition than he ever was after, BUT he was also infinitely better than Sanjaya. EW's explanation is that Sanjaya has the Soccer Mom bloc.

[identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com 2007-03-13 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
BTW Do you think that Blake on AI looks a lot like Travis???

Max or Austen?

(Anonymous) 2007-03-15 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Allison sent me over. I've been dying to talk to people about Grease. (See my post http://www.journalscape.com/Debby/2007-03-07-22:20). Anyway, I love Max. Do you think the producers set him up to be the underdog? Austen has seemed overly forced until this week. His voice was beautiful, and I felt he finally showed some real emotion. None of the women do it for me. I'm so glad the spiritual tips one is gone. I was really offended when I heard she was leading little prayer meetings before the show. Which raises the question, should their personal lives matter? For instance, what if one of the guys is gay? Does that mean he can't play a straight lover? So, I'm being hoisted on my own pitard.
