Things are going well with adding my new cat Chester to the household. He's been enjoying having a room to himself and comes out of his safe corner for petting whenever I come in. He's been eating and drinking and using the litterbox with no problem and seems to really enjoy his wet food (even though I've been mashing up his pills in it). Sawyer is very aware that another cat is around, but is handling it by calling to me from outside the door whenever I go into Chester's room. For his part, Chester then hisses and goes into red alert mode and bats at me if I try to pet him. Sawyer then insists on much attention when I come out. Last night, when Sawyer was asleep in the basement, I closed that door and let Chester explore the rest of the house. He did several circuits and sniffed at all the places that Duncan had peed in when he was sick (I guess that means that I still haven't gotten the scent out of the carpet) and then settled back into his room for a snack. He has not been meowing at the door or anything, so I believe that he is still adjusting. He had been in several fights at Kitty Cottage, where there are 50 cats all living together. I think he is enjoying having some space to himself. I just hope that I can teach him to share it with Sawyer. But in any event, it's so far ,so good!

While you might not notice it, you will never get rid of the smell so that cats won't notice it. Unless you rip up the carpet and replace the floor boards underneath. And even then, there might be a lingering scent for the cats to notice in the walls.

Excellent!

I thought of another thing that helps ease the transition - feed them separately, but keep their food bowls in the same place - if there's a way to keep them separate each time you feed them. They'll associate eachother's scents with the pleasure of eating. That's the theory, anyway.
