I've just returned from having my car fixed. The scary "Service Engine Soon" light had come on, so I had to find a new Saturn dealer to diagnose it. The nice service person whom I go to at the former Saturn dealer that has become a VW dealer in Devon recommended that I try Springfield or Jenkintown as the closest two. So I took it to Saturn in Springfield and they used their diagnostic computer ($86 just to run the diagnostic) to discover that the seal on my gas cap has broken. Apparently this lets too much air into the fuel tank and caused the warning light to go on. So they fixed that and then tested my battery which was having trouble holding its charge and in the end replaced that too. So, the car is back in action and I only worked a half day today. Score!

I don't do well with car problems. I realize I don't take great care of it, but try to keep it serviced. There was a time in my life I did not own a car and rented when I needed temporary wheels. Loved that. These days I feel I need a car for mom support more than anything else.

Yay for fixable, not-too-expensive problems!

I think the hardest part about dealing with car problems for me is having to trust the mechanics to diagnose and fix the problem without creating new ones. Since I don't know much about cars myself, I am not only paying for that expertise, but I am unable to determine whether I am being hustled. That's why I prefer to work with a specific mechanic who at least knows me, so I can feel like I'm receiving good advice. There's also the inconvenience aspect, but once I realized that I could rent a car if I really needed one, that became easier to deal with.

Thanks for the kind words.
