My new mindless TV/reality show obsession is "So You Think You Can Dance?" Last night they had the top twenty dancers paired off for the first time. My favorites were Benji and Donyelle who did an amazing HipHop routine and Travis and Martha who did a classic Broadway routine. They are the couples to beat, IMHO. The three couples with the lowest number of votes will be in danger of elimination tonight. My picks for the bottom three are Ivan and Alison, Dmitri and Joy, and Ben and Ashlee. Ivan and Alison did a Salsa and he stood there like a pole while she did great. Dmitri and Joy did a HipHop number which was a new style for both of them. Ben and Ashlee were stuck with an 80's Disco number and poorly executed it. One boy and one girl from any of the bottom three are picked to go and I think it will be Ben and Ashlee. Results show is tonight!

Wow - you and I have remarkably similar taste in tv!

I agree with your picks. And I totally agree with your assessment of Ivan and Alison! And, btw, what was up with Cat's dress? Ugh. I didn't watch this one last season, so this is a new experience for me.

In other trash tv news, do you watch Hell's Kitchen? I love it, and I am SO glad it's started up again. I cheered when Polly got knocked out, and I think I might have a crush on Heather. Poor Larry - us short ones gotta stick together!

OMG, her dress was simply awful - those colors, those patterns - what was she thinking? She's the new host for Season Two and is way better than the previous host. She's just got to stop dressing herself funny.

I haven't tried Hell's Kitchen. I'm a bit leary of the food shows. I had watched Top Chef, but felt cheated because one couldn't taste the food (since it's on TV), so I felt like I was missing a big part of the experience. Also, from the previews it looks like HK is more about the stress than the food, and I'm not sure I'd enjoy that. What about it do you enjoy?

I have to admit that I love watching the contestants on HK squirm and eventually wither under the heat (sometimes literally - last season, the team that lost a challenge had their kitchen A/C turned off!). But I also like the challenges which make the aspiring chefs think on their feet about tastes, textures, plating, etc.

I find it fascinating how long some of the people in the actual restaurant are willing to wait for food! Or how obnoxious some of them turn out to be when displeased!

Also, I enjoy watching Chef Ramsay as he Jekyll and Hydes his way through the experience. When he's the kitchen Chef, he's the hard ass you see in the commercials, but when he's out of the kitchen being a mentor-type guy, he's a pussycat.

Plus, I've always had it in the back of my head that I might go study at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) one day. So I like to watch them and think, "I could SO do better than that!" lol

I'm watching it too...hadn't seen the actual competition till right before the ressults show. WTF? That results weren't what I anticipated, at all. The two who left were in my top five.

Yeah, I did a double-take when Stanislav and Erin where revealed to be in the bottom three instead of Ben and Ashlee. But I think that Nigel was right in saying that at this stage it is as much about personality as it is about talent. Neither of them had shown much of themselves yet, and their solo dances did not help them in this regard. His was boring and hers was kind of frantic. Thinking about it, Erin has shown nothing that has made her stand out from the others and Stanislav has not shown much versatility. I'm glad that it is the judges rather than the audience who actually decide who goes. I appreciated Nigel's comment about how they are taking the whole picture into account (although I wonder about whether that meand that they are more likely to keep someone who makes for good TV over someone with more talent).

And I thought that Alison's solo dance rocked... and she says it was all improv! She's raised her cred in my book. Ivan's definitely got to step it up for next week, though.
