Well, my first grant is done and in the mail to NIH and I'm hard at work on my second one, due in two weeks. I just came from a late Friday meeting where I was specifically invited by my Dept Chair about doing another one soon. The funding crunch is really causing a panic amongst us academics! I have many exam essays to start grading this weekend, and I was able to bring in my laptop to have work fix my broken dial up connection so I can keep working this weekend. Yay?!?

My cat is being worrisome - he has lost some weight (he's a small cat to begin with so it's particularly noticeable) and has not eaten for a few days. I've begun treating him for his UTI, so hopefully the drugs will help him get back on his feed soon. He has been interactive with me, but it's clear he doesn't feel well. Poor kitty.

The high point of the week was my Beloved taking me out for my birthday dinner at Pod (postponed because of my Oct surgery) which also celebrated my grant submission Everything we had was delicious!!! The decor was very modern/futuristic with plastic tables, colored lighting, and a motorized food belt on the sushi bar. We had mint flavored saki and vanilla vodka with lychee and ginger drinks. We had wonderful chicken and shrimp eggrolls with excellent dipping sauces and a hot wild mushroom platter for appetizers. We had sushi that had been dipped in tempura sauce, which turned out to be excellent. Then we had game hen with potatoes and edamame and slices of duck with raspberry sauce and mashed blue potatoes. Then for dessert, we had a chocolate mousse napoleon with carmelized bananas. Yum!!! Thanks again, Hon!

I don't mean to sound alarmist

I regret not acting earlier when my cat first started losing weight. Have you tried tempting him with chicken or turkey baby food?

I called my Vet and that's exactly what I was told to do. I did manage to get some melted frozen yogurt (his one human food treat) into him last night and he did keep it down, so that was good. I'm off to the store for baby food shortly...

Oooohhh! Pod! I went there was I was in Philadelphia last and was completely blown away. It was amazing. I'm so glad you had such a great b'day dinner.

(And you have essays to grade? I don't start the semester until next week and I'm teaching a class I've never taught before--fun and exciting but a LOT of work!)

New flavor combinations, well made and well presented food with futuristic decor - it's designed to appeal to an SF crowd!

Essays are from my med school class that runs from Dec through Jan and crams 85 hours of instruction (which we do in the Mar to Jun class) into 35 hours. There are 50 students in this class and multi-part essays (sigh). Fortunately, I can grade for specific info included and not worry about style, so it isn't as challenging as it could be. What cool class will you be teahcing?

It still sounds like a LOT of work in a very short time.

I'll be teaching "Reading and Writing the Short Story." Which will be a lot of fun, I think, but I've never taught an international literary short story class before, so choosing what to include (and dealing with the fact that I CANNOT include everything that's worth including) has been interesting.

Ooh, I love Pod. I almost always get the macadamia chicken stir-fry, which is amazing. But when I'm in the mood for steak, the wasabi-encrusted steak with wasabi mashed potatoes is incredible, too.

Thanks! I asked for $100,000 in a 10 page proposal, so that means my words are potentially worth $10,000/page :-)
