The Phases of Grant Writing

I've worked hard all week on my grant that is due on Wed and spent most of today at work with my grad students slaving over it. I managed to pound it into a semi-coherent form so that I was not embarrassed to send it to several of my colleagues for feedback on the full draft. I'm definitely progressing from the "everything I write is crap" phase to the "I must reward myself with an expensive toy" phase. I'm thinking it might be time to buy a Tivo. The next phase is "I am God's gift to grant writing and how dare they not fund me!" I look forward to reaching that phase :-)

I also called in a favor to ask one of my colleagues to give my evening Board review lecture the night before my grant was due. And I managed to sweet talk the Office into giving me an extension on grading the essay exams from the 50 med students that were due this week. It looks like my second grant due in mid Feb will be a lot easier to write, since it will be education focused rather than research focused.


So any advice on Tivo models or service, if I do go ahead with my phase 2 reward???

I'm a proud Tivo owner, I got the basic box hooked up here, the "40hrs" model.
If you have broadband internet, you can network the Tivo and actually transfer programs to a computer so you can burn them to DVD. That is the main advantage over the comcast DVR which I'm sure jenn_girl, phillyvixen or dreamingbear and chemicallcrow can speak on at great length since they use that service all the time.

The main plus of DVR over TIVO (for me at least) is there was no initial investment, and it's only $10 a month on top of digital cable. Another plus is you can watch one show and record another, or record two shows at once--I don't know if you can do that with TIVO.

So there is something else called DVR that is like Tivi but is part of Digital Cable?!? Do you also have Urban Cableworks for your service or is it Comcast? I wonder if Urban Cableworks has any info on this?

I have comcast...I don't know if Urban Cableworks does the same thing. Unfortunatly, comcast was our only choice for cable provider.

James and I are addicted to our Tivo. We don't ever watch tv when it's happening. We love pausing tv shows. If you're a busy professional, and we know you are, Tivo is made for you.

No, they don't give me a promotional consideration.

I have Dish Network because we prefer satellite. I have two DVRs that allow me to record two things at once up to 100hrs. There was no initial outlay but we pay someting like $10 above until the units (that were priced at market) are paid off. I love DVR! Skipping commercials is such a joy :-) Also, being able to rewind even when I am watching something in real-time is loverly. Sometimes you miss what a character says, you know? Good luck. We had a TiVo when we lived in the US, and it rocked. In Canada, there are only lame substitutes, and we miss many more programs and the whole programming process is much more labor intensive.

I, however, am not the one in charge of the remotes or things attached to them, so I cannt say much beyond that.

Yea-rah on the grant writing, by the way!
