"I am a leaf on the wind"

I finally saw Serenity and give it two thumbs up (I did not go to any of the advance showings, but held out for opening weekend). The daughter of one of the members of my SF book club is the lead story editor and I saw her name prominently displayed in the opening credits.
Major SPOILERS behind the cut - be warned.
It felt like a solid wrap up of the tv series. The characters all had their moments and transitioned well to the big screen. The dialog was sharp, as I have come to expect from Joss, and some of the visual images were very striking. I particularly liked River's triumphant scene, which appeared to be a homage to Buffy. The ending actually reminded me of Blake's 7 in that the ship and the crew go on, despite the fact that some don't make it. I never much liked Book's character, so I wasn't to choked up to see him go, but I did shed a tear over Wash. I loved the interchange between Mal and Zoe regarding getting the ship up and running again - they weren't just talking about the ship. I loved Honora's trick with the incense and the non-resolution of her relationship with Mal. In contrast, the resolution of Simon and Kaylee's relationship was also quite satisfying (especially her line about now having something to live for). The bad guy was appropriately creepy and fanatical, and while his change of heart seemed a little farfetched, I was willing to buy it. I was very glad to see River develop so much, although there now seems to be nothing that she cannot do. Reavers are definitely scary, but River is potentially scarier and that was well realized. The final scene with Mal and River was quite touching, and hearing the tv theme song at the very end of the credits made the experience complete. I feel a sense of closure with this series, and while I hope this movie does well, I don't need them to make another one. I definitely recommend it and will be sure to buy the DVD.
