I am still astonished at how badly our govt has responded to this disaster - with two days warning no less! I just feel terrible for all the people. The breakdown of law is so hard to watch, though somewhat understandable (theft for food and supplies - yes, theft for tvs, assault, rape - no). I heard a report that local authorities were being authorized to shoot to kill to restore order, which disturbs me even more. I feel like all of the happy memories that I've had with New Orleans have been washed away, too. And why haven't we heard much about the surrounding areas that were hit as well? It's still a disaster for the people who live on the coast of Mississippi, even if folks here on the East Coast don't recognize the names of their towns. I couldn't sleep last night, so I decided to donate online to the Red Cross. That helped. To paraphrase a portion of the Seder, one of the four questions is "What does all this have to do with me?" and the answer is "We are all part of the community." Wisdom of the ages still applies.
