One of my friends who went to Worldcon in Glasgow called to tell me that Susannah Clarke's first novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. I had looked at it in the bookstore and it hadn't appealed to me, but this certainly makes me want to reconsider. Can anyone else recommend it?

I thought it was a magnificent book. If Anthony Trollope were writing weird fantasy, he would have turned out this book. It's a big doorstop of a book, but I thought it was a total page turner.

I liked it but didn't love it. Yet many people I know did love it. I think you have to love English literature of the period to really get into it. I though it was a bit of a slog.
