Since I'm hanging out at home, I'd appreciate some distraction. Let's make a list of all the songs we can think of that have colors named in them. The rule will be that the color mentioned has to actually refer to the color, so something like "feeling blue" or "picking violets" is right out. Extra points for unusual colors!

From: (Anonymous)
As a former camp counselor, I've got a million of them. We called this "I can sing a rainbow"

Red and yellow and pink and green
purple and orange and blue oh
I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too
listen with your eyes listen with your eyes
sing everything you see oh
Red, and yellow, and. . .

Starting with them all, "The Rainbow Connection" (the Muppets), or does that one fail the "not in a figurative sense" test?

Silver
"Maxwell's Silver Hammer," The Beatles
"Silver Bells," Christmas song popularized by Bing Crosby.

Silver and Gold
"Silver threads among the gold," Hart Pease Danks (composer), recorded by Elizabeth Spencer in 1916.
And, of course, the song "Silver and Gold," popularized by Burl Ives.

Red and gold
"Autumn Leaves," sung by Piaf ("the autumn leaves of red and gold..."). The French original, "Les feuilles mortes," doesn't mention any colors.

And speaking of French...
Bleu
"Plus bleu que tes yeux," one of Edith Piaf's songs.
"Un coin tout bleu," more Piaf

Blanc
"Les roses blanches," Berthe Sylvia (French performer from the 40s)
"Les blouses blanches," yet more Piaf

Noir
"L'homme à la moto," Piaf (a French version of an American song, "Black Leather Jacket and Motorcycle Boots." Un blouson de cuir noir...
"La bande en noir," Théo Sarapo (who? Piaf's husband...but it's a long story, and it's a terrible song).

Brun et blond
"Le brun et le blond," Piaf (I have lots of Piaf).

And then there's Hebrew
"Hakos hak'chula" (The blue glass), Ivri Lieder
"B'chulzat pasim" (Striped shirt), Ivri Lieder (both of these were hits in Israel)

Date: 2007-10-12 11:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jaidit.livejournal.com
A minor correction: "L'homme à la moto" is a translation of "Black Denim Trousers."

The original (found here), also mentions a "red tattoo."

When Piaf sang it, oddly enough it becomes "un coeur blue sur la peau blême" (is pale a color?).

Date: 2007-10-13 01:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com
Pale is not a color, but "A Whiter Shade of Pale" can go onto the list!

Date: 2007-10-13 03:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jaidit.livejournal.com
Well, if you can have a "whiter shade of pale," just as you can have a "redder shade of purple," then it does sound that "pale" is a color.

And if we're counting points, how many points do I get for the "L'homme à la moto"/"Black Denim Trousers" combo, since the lyrics cite black (in both languages), red (in English), blue (in French), and we have our contentious pale.

Date: 2007-10-13 01:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] logisticslad.livejournal.com
Wow! I never even considered songs in other languages. You've convinced me to create an additional category for SILVER/GOLD and for RAINBOW.

I'm not sure where your last one about the striped shirt should go.

Date: 2007-10-13 03:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jaidit.livejournal.com
Mix it in with rainbow, perhaps? As far as I can make out, Lieder is singing about this guy who's won his heart. I don't know. The lyrics are a bit beyod me. One of the clearest references is to "a new Japanese car." Someday I'm going to understand all the words to one of his songs.
