I've been spending the day at my brother's helping him look after my two rambunctious nephews while mom is away on a business trip. We've been having a blast, but it has been tiring. We've been to the park, then played with Play-Doh. My older nephew and I have created a Play-Doh game called "Snakes and Snails." He has me make a snake with a big mouth and fangs, and then a number of little snails which the snake happily pounces upon and devours. It's snails because my brother has a fish tank that has been infested with snails and he's been trying to be rid of them for months. My nephew is a pretty sharp cookie. At one point I asked him if he was afraid that the snake would try to eat him and he said no because he isn't made of Play-Doh :-) We took a trip to the bookstore and I bought them a dinosaur and an Elmo book. The dinosaur book came with a model dino skeleton and we had much fun playing with it. We had chicken nuggets and cheesesteaks for dinner and my 18 month old nephew kept mock feeding me his nuggets and milk - baby humor! Mom called and everyone said hello. Then it was back to the park for swings, sandbox, slides, and hind 'n' seek. We read Bob the Builder stories and have put them to bed. Now my brother and I are crashed on the couch hanging out congratulating ourselves for having survived the day. I'm staying over and the nephews have assured me that they will wake me up for breakfast. I'll help out in the morning so that my brother can take a shower and then they're off to a friend's birthday party and I can go. I'm having a great time, and I'm sure I'm going to sleep well tonight!

After trying out a few names, I've decided to name my new kitty, Sawyer. It's the name of my favorite character from Lost and evokes Tom Sawyer as well. The little prince has decided that he definitely enjoys living here and will graciously keep me on as his servant provided that I give him wet food and brush him whenever he asks. We are negotiating frequency of attention, but since I discovered that he is happy to entertain himself by looking out the window, home life has improved. My parents stopped by to meet their new grandkitten and everyone was delighted with each other.

I had my first large dinner party on Sunday, where I made dinner for seven guests and then we watched the Oscars. Everything worked out pretty well, especially as I had guests bring salad and desserts and invited one to come over early to be my kitchen slave while I hosted. I made my tried and true Dijon Chicken with Basmati rice and peas. I don't cook much, but I have about half a dozen recipes that I have learned by heart. It felt good but stressful to entertain, but I figure that if I wait until the house is more ready, then I will never do it, so I pushed myself to clean and to deal. It was, in the end, much fun. We enjoyed the Oscars, although most of these friends left before the show ended. Thankfully, my gym buddy who never watches these things, stayed through to the end to support my effort and help clean up a bit. Sawyer was bold and friendly with all the strangers and insisted on meeting and greeting everyone, then perched on the couch to watch TV with us. He seems to believe that people are not to be feared and they might be induced to pet him, which in his fuzzy little mind is a good thing.

Still here

I haven't felt much like posting recently and I realized that it's because I seem to have a limit on how much creative expression I can manage. What with all the teaching, manuscript writing, and grant writing I'm doing this month, posting on LJ feels more like a chore than a fun thing. Never fear, I'm still reading it, though. I'm going to have brunch with my parents today, then exchange the Full Screen version of Serentity DVD that I accidentally bought for the widescreen version, then work on my grant and maybe go to the gym. Life is good, just being very busy.
