I've often done the "I'll work shift while you all go off and be crazy" thing during non-Jewish holidays.
Back when I was avoiding my family, that gave me a great excuse not to be there at family gatherings too. (Despite being Jewish, Xmas was the day they all had off, so Hanukkah got celebrated then).
