the benny plot is the one thing that wasn't well developed in the film. In act 2 of the play, you begin to understand that mimi runs to benny, and he falls for her again. he realizes angel killed his dag, he pays for angels funeral anyway. he pays for mimi to go to rehab. he should have been there with them at the end- it seems like he and collins work out some of their shit and are able to move on with a good part of the "family" back together. benny becomes human and isn't just presented as the anti-mark
