I've been spending an industrious Sunday alternately petting the cat and doing chores. I spent several hours mowing and raking out in the backyard. I am very pleased with the job my friends had done on my yard last fall. I have a flat yard that's full of all the same kind of grass, in contrast to my neighbors yards. The perennials have returned - I have a daffodil, a tulip, a crocus or two, some phlox, and a pair of bleeding hearts. This is in addition to the huge lilac bush, butterfly bush, and three sizable azaleas. I don't have big plans for the yard this year other than to get into the habit of maintaining it. I'm hopeful that the neighbors will follow through on their promise to cut down the huge pine tree that overshadows the yard and much of the house. I am tired of cleaning pine needles out of the gutters and off of the back porch. When the tree is gone, I will also have more gardening options.

I'm waiting for the second estimate on the roof. Both roofers agreed on what needed to be done. The flat roof needs to be stripped and replaced with a rubberized roof within the year. The back porch roof has cracks and should be replaced ASAP. The front porch tin roof needs to be recoated. The first roofer gave me an estimate of $4050 with a 12 year guarantee. The second estimate should be in shortly and then I'll decide. Since both roofers were highly recommended by friends and neighbors and they agree, I don't feel the need to seek another estimate. Of course, affording it all will be a major challenge since I've already spent most of my tax rebate on my car. I'm hopeful that I will be able to extend my home equity line of credit at a reasonable rate in order to cover the roof expenses. It's a lot of money for piece of mind to prevent leaks, but it does need doing. I'm learning more and more about the joys of home ownership as I mark the two and a half year point of owning the house.

I did some dishes and ran a load of laundry. I don't think I'm up for painting the bathroom today, but I need to finish that soon. It would be good of me to sort some of these papers that are hiding most of my dining room table. But first, the cat is demanding more petting.
