Film Festival
Jul. 13th, 2005 01:00 amSaw two films tonight at the Philly Film Festival - Based on a True Story, a documentary about the real people on which Dog Day Afternoon was based and Girlfriend, a Bollywood production a la Basic Instinct. The documentary was quite good, especially considering the fact that two of the principle people are dead and the bank robber (who had been played by Al Pacino in the film) refused to cooperate with the interviewer. Clips from the movie were interwoven with interviews from surviving hostages and police. I thought it captured things well. Girlfriend was a hoot, made more so by the fact that we were shown the Hindi version without subtitles. There was a bit of initial confusion since the characters occasionally spoke English, but not enough to figure out what was going on. The Festival Director offered to refund everyone's ticket, but then one of the audience members who spoke Hindi agreed to translate. He did a phenomenal job and many people stayed and enjoyed the movie. It was a love triangle between a woman, her boyfriend, and her best female friend who was in love with her. The lesbian character slowly loses it and tries everything in her power to break them up. Plus there was much singing and sexy dancing. It was a hoot, extremely progressive by Indian film standards, but already been done by American standards. Still, it was a lot of fun, especially with a translator and an audience that was not taking it at all seriously. Oh yes, and all the actors were extremely beautiful.
The other film that I had seen on Sunday was Happy Endings, which starred Lisa Kudrow, Tom Arnold, Jason Ritter, Daniel Sutcliff, Laura Dern, and Maggie Gyllenhall. It followed the lives of a number of characters who were all connected to each other in interesting ways. It was well acted - Lisa Kudrow played against type, Jason Ritter played a gay man, and Maggie Gyllenhall played a very sexy singer. I thought it was pretty good, but not a must see.
I may go see Race You to the Bottom which stars Amber Benson over the weekend.
